The research objective of the Drakkar team is to study all aspects of networking and explore new opportunities opened by all-IP networks, in particular, the development of future wireless networks and the integration of Sensors and Smart Objects within the Internet of Things.

The Drakkar team conducts research in many areas of computer networking and mobile computing:
  • wireless networks (802.11-WiFi, Bluetooth),
  • wireless sensor networks and Internet of Things (large-scale interconnection of Smart Objects, 802.15.4, BLE, LoRa, and 5G-MTC)
  • future network architectures (advanced routing, mobility, self-organized networks, novel transport protocols, congestion control),
  • traffic measurement and monitoring,
  • network security (appplication characterization, anomaly detection, cyberattacks, IoT security).

The team has gained considerable expertise in: i) protocols at lower layers of the TCP/IP stack, in particular for energy constrained wireless sensor networks and long range low rate networks, ii) MAC access methods and routing wireless networks, iii) security aspects of IoT devices and networks. It has obtained highly visible results published in the best conferences (ACM SIGCOMM, IEEE INFOCOM, ACM CONEXT, ACM MSWIM, ACM EWSN). Some significant results include: the analysis of the 802.11 performance anomaly, the development of an optimal wireless access method called Idle Sense, the analysis of the TCP unfairness problem in 802.11 networks, the definition a novel geographical routing protocol for spontaneous wireless mesh networks, and a new content-centric approach to IoT called Featurecast.

The team has intensive collaborations with industry: several research projects with STMicroelectronics, Orange, and Thales.
